My 2 year old is playing with her feces

by darkangeltearz, Nov 07, 2008 02:24AM
I have a 2 year old little girl, she will be 3 in January. She was born 13 weeks premature and has developmental delays as well as spastic diplega cerebral palsy. For the past 2 weeks she has taken to playing with her feces. She does not remove her diaper but will take off any clothes. She reaches in her diaper and covers the walls, herself and her crib and bedding. It happens every day. I'm at my wits end. I have no idea what could be causing this and I have gotten so many conflicting theories online it's ridiculous. I dont spank my child. Nor yell at her. I have told her no repeatedly. She isnt ready for potty training.  She also stays awake almost all night. I am reluctant to go to my pediatrician with this as she tends to blow me off about things lately and we are currently trying to find a new one.

This is actually a fairly common occurance with younger children. My grandson with Autism played with his excrement for quite a while before we finally convinced him it was not okay. One of the things I read about that helped was making the showers lukewarm, not warm. The idea was for the cleaning up process to be uncomfortable rather than something he would enjoy. (He LOVES baths and showers.) We didn't make it actually cold -- and that wasn't suggested either -- just lukewarm to cool so it wasn't a reward although I've read that many actually do the cold shower bit. We also did time outs and watched him closely so we could catch him starting to go for his diaper and remind him that it wasn't okay. I think part of it is actually a sensory thing for some of the kids. Maybe you could redirect her interest to play dough?

This is an entire thread on the subject at another site that you might find helpful:
