Antidepressants & memory loss

by gerry123, Nov 07, 2008 11:49PM
Have been depressed as long as I can remember, since about 3 years old.  Now 59.  Went on 100mg desipramine around '95 and have been on them ever since.  Have tried many of new antidepressants, but all had side affects, mainly sexual.

Problem:  I'm currently running a warehouse.  Work efficiently and effectively, but my boss & office mgr. find it really weird that I can't remember specifics on orders I've worked on.   Plus a friend in NV (I'm back in Cda after 10 yr. in NV as a distribution mgr) told me his girlfriend has severe memory loss, which has also been attributed to antidepressants.

Are my concerns of memory loss due to antidepressants justified?

Thanks!
Gerry

Not sure of AD you are on. Can't remember the names like I did years ago. I do know that my short term memory is soooooobad it scares me. Reading on MH I have read many that have experienced memory loss from one extent to the other. I can remember things past as well as could be expected of a 50+ person. Remembering things in my past---I can remember specific details, for instance, if a towel or book is involved in the memory-I see just how it was folded down to the slant it was in the memory. Weird or what? My family -extended says it's all the meds I am on. I don't feel I have to justify to aunts and sister why I feel need to cont. meds I just chalk it up to ignorance on their parts. But to answer your question, yes-I feel your concerns are justified. And yes there are sexual side effects also. My philosophy has always been that of -If a person's marriage or relationship is based on sex, they may find themselves in a pickle one day. After 30 years o marriage--we are ok. we get along and he does put up with a lot from me. It's not the storybook marriage by no means. but we love each other. We hold hands and so much more than physicl sex. Geez- I think I went on and on. Hope I haven't jinxed your post. Many times there have been no posts after I post. Yes, I am paranoid too  Maybe you will get additional feedback. There are many many here that reach out to others .

Hi,

As far as the memory loss.  I'm right there with ya.  I was on anti-depressants for about 7 years & now at 30 have noticed that I do have quite a bit of memory loss.  I actually find it quite disturbing.  I do the same thing...forget details of something that I *JUST* worked on.  It drives me nuts.  I don't take any medications anymore unless they're natural supplements.  I've found that natural supplements have helped me quite a bit :-) .

I'm in my 30s & when starting on valproic acid & celexa, I've had some serious memory issues & brain fogs. It's literally cost me. I've paid bills 2x, forgotten to pay bills altogether & my husband keeps having to remind himself that I'm not being an idiot on purpose. Every time I bring it up to professionals, though, it seems as though they're totally blowing off my concerns. Goin' in again this week & will bring it up (again) to see if maybe I'll be taken seriously this time...
